Anna Fermanova – Not A Russian Spy, But A Munitions Smuggler
Anna Chapman is out-dated, America; there’s a new Russian spy around, with Latvian origins. Anna Fermanova, a native of Latvia who has fascinated with her 24-year-old appearance on Facebook, has presumably stolen military equipment. The New York Daily News reports how the blonde import has presumably smuggled Raptor 4X Night Vision Weapons Sights to Moscow, where she went to visit her spouse, as outlined by court documents. Fermanova was arrested on July 15 at her home near Dallas after returning from her most recent trip to the homeland.
It ‘looks a lot worse than it really is,’ claims Anna Fermanova’s lawyer
According to Anna Fermanova’s legal representative Scott Palmer, “She’s a nice Jewish girl who lives with her sweet Latvian parents. There’s no terrorism link. There’s no espionage”. However, an informant whose name has not been revealed reportedly tipped immigration off as to Fermanova’s smuggling. Federal authorities who stopped Fermanova at Kennedy Airport before she boarded her flight for Moscow found a $ 7,000 Raptor 4X Night Vision Weapons Sight and two other sights worth $ 4,000 apiece.
According to reports, Fermanova told authorities she’d purchased the scopes online for her husband’s hunting party in Russia. The agents asked her if she knew it was illegal to take such military grade hardware out of the country, and her response was that she had signed some form of paperwork but was unsure exactly what the paperwork stated. Clearly, it was not an exporter’s license.
Fermanova admits she obscured the serial numbers
Fermanova reportedly used a black marker to cover up the serial numbers on the night vision scopes. Federal agents found her explanation and the act itself rather suspicious. When the authorities did allow Fermanova to go to Moscow without the scopes, they later took her passport and imprisoned her when she returned to America. She was charged with “knowingly and intentionally attempting to export defense articles on the United States Munitions list”. According to the Daily News, that offense comes with a 10-year prison sentence if Fermanova is convicted. Fermanova is currently under house arrest after posting $ 50,000 bail.
Once a check forger
Fermanova had a previous scrape with the law than involved a $ 76 forged check in 2003. The previous cosmetology student and English teacher was fined and sentenced to three years of probation. Speaking of beauty school, Fermanova’s Facebook popularity was largely built off photographs taken during her time in cosmetology. The notice her photographs garnered was quite similar to what Anna Chapman experienced with her own provocative photographs.
