Help with choosing first handgun – Baby Eagle, Springfield XD, Ruger or Walther?
I’m interested in finally buying my first firearm.
This will be for home defense as well as to take to the range.
Choices are
Baby Eagle 9mm – $469
Springfield XD 9mm – $489
Ruger SR9 – (would wait til recall is done) but saw one this weekend at a guns show for $430
Walther PPS – not sure of cost
Walter P22 – It was pretty cheap
I’m new to guns and have been trying to do some research but i’d like to get opinions from those that are more knowledgeable with guns

i live in texas and i’m looking for a 9mm mostly do to ammo cost and recoil
Walter P22 – $250-300 This is a .22LR firearm. It is great for practice and learning the fundimentals, so it would be a good investment. However the 22LR is an anemic little round and if you need to use a gun to defend yourself, you’d want something more than this. Either skip this one, or consider buying it in addition to something else.
Walther PPS – $450ish -This gun is a .380, which will cost a bit more than 9mm, and is much less potent. The gun is also quite slim and small. It would make a good concealed carry gun, but I don’t see that on your list. It is an old design, the Russians grabbed the blueprints during WW2 while invading germany, and gave them to lot of their cold war buddies. You can get pretty much the same gun for a lot less by looking for the Bersa Thunder. Also, the original Walther PPS, and to a much lesser degree, the Bersa, is known to be a “hand biter”, the slide comes back and scours the web of your hand between thumb and pointer unless you are holding it low. http://www.thegunsource.com/store/item/625_Hand_Guns_Pistols_Bersa_Bersa_Thunder_380_Compact.aspx

Springfield XD 9mm – $489
Ruger SR9 – $430
All of these would be good choices. Buy the one that fits your hand best, the one you can easily reach the controls on, and the one that is most economical for you.
If you like the ruger and would like to save a few dollars (maybe enough to get a 22LR handgun as well) look for the gun the Ruger SR9 is replacing the Ruger P95, you should be able to get one for $325 or so.
