An airsoft gun is a pneumatic gun that fires projectiles with the help of compressed air or other high pressurized gas as a propellant. Today’s airsoft guns are usually less-powered because of safety issues and legal limits. These guns can fire above 330 m/s. Most low-powered airsoft guns can be safely used in a garden also. In some countries, it is illegal to own them in residential areas.
Airsoft guns are also known as BB guns or pellet guns. But airsoft BB’s are 6 mm in diameter and are manufactured from plastic or other non-metallic materials and are considered as non-fatal.
The most general power method used for BB guns is the spring piston type. The lever action rifle was the first in BB guns and still is main in the inexpensive BB gun market. The Daisy 25 BB model that came after a pump action type of shotgun occupied the cheap but high quality market for 50 years.
Lever action models have low velocity at around 275 ft/s which is the effect of the weak springs used to make cocking efforts low. Multi-pump pneumatic guns are also available in market. The final type of power for BB guns is pre-compressed gas. The powerlet by Crosman is a throwaway bottle having 12 grams of liquid CO2.
There are safety measures which one has to follow while using BB guns. The guns should be used with enough precaution and should never be discharged at other people than the participants. Simple BB guns which are available at Wal-Mart can fire over 1000 fps. BB guns are different from airsoft guns which are not injurious to humans. Any lead .177 pellet shoot at 600 fps has skin piercing capacities and possibility of casualty if fired inaccurately. Steel BB’s have large ricocheting capacity from hard surfaces like brick or concrete. Eye protection is not necessary when shooting BB’s but is usually recommended for safety.
