Slide Scanners
Slide scanners are convenient tools for photographers. It will convert slides to high quality copies, and the copies are transferred directly to your computer.
Most scanners come with software that makes enhancing your photos effortless and efficient. Converting slides to digital images have many advantages.
Slide sizes vary depending on the camera. You may have individual slides, one picture per slide. Film strips are also popular. Film strips contain several pictures per strip. Slide scanners may accommodate both types of film. However, a scanner may only be able to convert one type. Be sure to find a scanner that meets your needs.
Slide scanners cannot improve photo quality. If the original slide is blurry or out of focus, a digital image will also be blurry. Yet, you may be able to enhance your photo using the software that accompanies the scanner. Most often, you will be able to manipulate the contrast, sharpness, and level of color. Additionally, you will be able to crop the photo to create focus on the key elements.
A slide adapter may come with your scanner. This is a useful tool in scanning. A slide adapter fixes the location of the scan. By stabilizing the photo, you will decrease editing time once the photo is transferred.
Scanners offer a large variety of specifications. Each specification should be evaluated prior to purchasing. One important aspect is the resolution. Typically, a slide scanner will report the maximum hardware and interpolated resolutions.
The resolution and sharpness of the specifications indicate the quality of the scan. The resolution is reported as two numbers, for example 4000×8000. The unit of measure is a dpi. Dpi means dots per inch. The first number indicates the dpi along the x-axis. The y-axis dpi is measured by the second number. In general, larger numbers indicate improved resolution.
Interpolated resolution indicates the size of the digital output. This is always larger than the hardware resolution. This is especially important in slide scanning because the slide is very small. However, keep in mind that the quality of the scan does not increase.
The light source dictates the sharpness of the transfer. In a slide scanner, a CCD array is used to interpret the light into an electrical charge. Darker areas of a photograph reflect less light, and these result in dark areas of the scan. Each area of the slide reflects a different level of light, and this is how the image is transferred. Bulb type indicates quality, and florescent bulbs result is less sharp transfers.
Choose the scanner based on the speed you require. Higher end models tend to scan faster without a reduction in value. A less expensive scanner will be slower. Evaluate your requirement. Do you tend to have many slides or few? What are your limitations?
