Three Popular Home Audio Technologies From The Previous 150 Years
One of the earliest reasonably priced home entertainment media were the fascinating vinyl records. Compact discs were as intriguing and revolutionary as vinyl was previously, and perhaps even more so. Tape cassettes were a popular non-disc-shaped home audio medium for many years that first shared the market with vinyl and then compact discs before finally losing popularity. All these formats allowed us to hear recordings of music and bypass or rifle through tracks at our leisure (although in different ways), and each one had its various pros and cons.
Classic vinyl records were the pre-recorded music technology that played on the gramophone, the first of this kind of machine inexpensive enough for the majority of people in industrialized places to afford. Emile Berliner had invented this machine, which made use of vinyl discs in lieu of the much larger sized wax or tinfoil cylinders of Thomas Edison’s earlier gadget. A machine’s needle would be dragged along very small grooves in a vinyl record and vibrate according to their forms, reproducing sound for the listener to take in, with the aid of a conjoined amplifying apparatus. Even though records could replicate sounds of a wide range of frequencies, their surfaces could be easily nicked and they could distort if exposed to too much heat.
A scaled-down alternate option to the large gramophone, tape players were commercially successful for a couple of decades. The potential for scraping is real with CDs, although resurfacing devices can certainly fix issues with the bottom, transparent side of a disc.
Without needing to rely on radio, we had the ability to hear our favorite songs anytime on Beatles vinyl records, Allman Brothers cassettes, Nirvana CDs, and tons of others. By having these three media available, consequently, our lives were certainly made more satisfying.
