With over 14 ‘main lakes’ in the area then there is plenty of opportunity for water-based activities. Anything you can think of to do with water is on offer including canoeing and kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and water skiing; for the more gentile many of the lakes offer boat hire. The Great North Swim takes place every year at Lake Windermere and this is for the ultimate water sport enthusiast. Open water swimming is gaining popularity and this competition allows open-air swimmer to compete for charity.
Rock climbing and abseiling are popular outdoors activity that people enjoy when they come to The Lake District. In fact the area is often regarded as the birthplace of rock climbing. There are climbs suitable for all levels of experience and opportunities to learn. If you enjoy caving then there are lots of caves and caverns to explore beneath the famous lakes and mountains.
