K9 – Police Dog USA – The leash / lead still attached during attack -why ?
Why is the leash ? (lead in UK) still attached to the Police Dogs when they are sent into attack to apprehend criminals ? This looks dangerous for the Dog with a long leather strap or rope attached to it as it jumps fences runs through bushes etc ?? I am sure the professional standards set by the Police Dog Section know what they are doing but when i see the Dogs chasing a criminal the leash looks very dangerous for the Dog ?
The leash being attached or unattached is a matter of policy and training. Way back in the Dark Ages, when I was an Air Force Sentry Dog handler, we left the leash attached when we set the dog on someone in sight and close. If the dog had to cover a lot of ground the leash was unattached. A dog sent into a building or underbrush, would not have the leash attached. I don’t know if that has changed in the many, many years since I was a handler. I still miss Duke. . .
