Tiger Woods swearing on Masters telecast offends Jim Nantz
Jim Nantz was offended by Tiger Woods’ swearing on live TV after the beleaguered recovering sex addict shanked some shots during last weekend’s Masters telecast. Nantz, who called the tournament for CBS, expressed his outrage on the air during a New York sports talk radio show Monday.

Jim Nantz, a veteran announcer who has called Super Bowls, Final Fours and numerous Masters, publicly scolded Tiger Woods swearing during Saturday’s third-round Masters telecast. Woods shouted, “Tiger Woods, you suck,” following a lousy tee shot on the par-3 6th hole. The shot didn’t bite, rolling about 70 feet away from the pin. Woods then botched a birdie putt, pushing it nearly 20 feet past the hole and ended up with a bogey four. Nantz’s broadcasting partner on the Masters telecast, Vern Lundquist, said “I don’t think he’s pleased,” which may qualify for the biggest understatement uttered by a sportscaster on the air so far this year.

Jim Nantz perhaps observed Woods on a later play with disgust, when he uttered an expression that many would probably say breached the sacred third commandment. Not a biggie? Well, it certainly was to Jim Nantz, who, if you can remember, said on WFAN’s Mike Francesa Show “If I would have said that on the air, I would have been fired.” Nantz said Tiger Woods swearing hadn’t bugged him in the past, but the fact that Tiger promised to change after his serial adultery debacle made things different for this year’s Masters telecast.

A series of hacks like this would have most golfers paying fast cash to their buddies. Tiger Woods, however, promised to show more respect to his fellow pros and their fans during a public apology for his prolific philandering in February. At the 2010 Masters, he managed to stay quiet for about 42 holes before the game got the better of him. Hoping for victory, Woods finished in fourth place, which indeed diminished his pay day. Victory was what winner Phil Mickelson took home, as well as a whopping $ 1.35 million. Woods was given $ 333,000, which is really nothing to him.

Sure Jim Nantz may be dismayed by Tiger’s language, but the CBS announcer shares a modicum of kinship with Woods in other ways. He doesn’t make billions, but he makes about $ 7 million a year and won’t be needing a pay day loan. The 50-year-old announcer admitted last fall during legal proceedings to divorce wife of 26 years that he had been fooling around with a 29-year-old girlfriend he met promoting his book, “Always by my Side.”
