Hoppes Elite
Gun maintenance with my first gun?

Just inherited my first gun (Walther PPK). From my understanding it is pretty new and was almost never shot, although I see some slight powder in the barrel from the back. However, it is very comfortable. Noticing some slight wear fading by where the bullet ejects. Is that normal? It’s been a week, but I haven’t shot it (but have learned how to operate it). How urgent is it for me to clean and oil it right now? And what kind of oil and solvent should I use? I only have access to a some Hoppes Elite oil as of now. Help a gun beginner out. No stupid comments please.

PS…since I’m such a beginner, any honest advice is greatly appreciated. I do plan to use it very much. But I guess I gotta start somewhere. Help me out.

Before doing anything that I suggest, make sure the gun is unloaded by removing the magazine (the long box that holds the ammunition) and pulling back the slide (the top half of the gun that surrounds the barrel). “Where the bullet ejects” is the front of the barrel, called the muzzle. If the sliding action of the slide feels rough or gritty, you should clean and oil it. If you don’t want to disassemble the gun, buy some Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber and spray it into all the crevices while working all the moving parts. Then spray in some lubricant like Break Free CLP or Remington Dri-Lube, enough to coat, but not so much it drips. If you want to use your Hoppe’s Elite Gun Oil, you’ll need to disassemble the gun, so read the downloadable owners manual (cited in my sources). Don’t use WD-40. It dries over time and forms a gummy residue. Also, don’t clean indoors or else you’ll get a wicked headache from breathing all the solvents. If the gun has a black finish (gun people call this finish “blued” which is a special kind of oxide finish that is supposed to resist corrosion), then some fading at the muzzle is typical of well-used guns and will not in itself affect performance. If the gun is silver colored, it is either stainless steel or nickel finished steel. Fading is not normal on these type of guns, and if the marks are gray, it’s powder residue. If there are fading marks on the corners and edges of the slide it means the gun has spent some time in a holster. The PPK is a great pistol and was James Bond’s (later) weapon of choice in Ian Fleming’s novels. His was chambered in 7.65mm.
