Improved Sling Arrangements For The M-4 Carbine
Slings have come a long way in the last few years and a lot of thought has been put into their design and how they attach to a weapon. As recently as the 1960s there was one designe of sling per weapon and only one way to attach it. The M16 and XM-177 increased the slinging options to enable carriage of the weapon in the ready position. The increase in importance of the rifle in the conflicts that followed the fall of the Soviet Union drove the development of the sling and its attachment, and the options available now would amaze a soldier of Word War 2.
The Magpul CTR has a hole in the toe of the butt for a paracord sling, a mounting point for a push button swivel in the either side of the stock and a total of four conventional sling mounting slots in the cheekpiece, buttplate and heel of the stock. With that, or any other collapsible stock fitted, you can increase the options still further by fitting a Magpul ASAP Ambidextrous Sling Attachment Point which enables rapid swapping of the sling from side to side, offering ambidextrous operation of the weapon. This really lends itself to firing over and around cover. Switching arms in the event of injury is facilitated. The ASAP is made of cast steel with a 1/8″ steel loop which allows a full 180 degrees of movement. A parkerized phosphate finish is used to protect the ASAP from corrision and wear. The ASAP is a straight swap for the factory end plate of either milspec or commercial receivers and requires no other modifications to the weapon. Any single point sling with a snap-hook attachment can be attached to the ASAP.
A front attachment point is required for two point slings. The Magpul RSA Rail Sling attachment clamps to any MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny or STANAG 4694 handguard rail in any of a number of configurations to provide for left or right and top or bottom sling mounting. The RSA is very low profile and will not obstruct sights. The steel sling attachment is tested ot 300 pounds of stress. To avoid snagging a rounded profile is used. Any two-piece sling with snap fittings will fit the RSA. Again a parkerized finish is used to protect the steel from corrosion.
The instructors at Magpul Dynamics put a lot of time and effort into designing the Magpul MS2 sling. This tactical sling is equally at home in single and two-point operation. Two-point carry is best used when carrying the rifle in non tactical situations and for long distances. Single-point slinging allows much higher levels of readiness to be maintained. Used in the conjunction with the ASAP, ambidextrous operation is achieved. The MS2 is made of thin, strong nylon and is available in black or dark earth. Double stitching is used for reinforcement in high stress areas. Rust-proof, heavy-duty bronze and polymer friction locks are used and the bronze snap hooks are equipped with spring loaded safety locks to ensure they only release when required. The length can be varied with one hand using the thumb loop provided. A “Lock jaw” snap-hook is used which rotates freely to prevent binding and twisting. This is the QR connector in single-point mode and the front attachment when used as a two-point sling. A paracord pigtail is fitted to the rear snap shackle to facilitate immediate release should you need to jettison the weapon.
