I’ve Heard About Auto Focus on Video Cameras – How Does it Work and is it a Good Idea?
For some people, the idea of getting a video camera, and simply pushing record, and pointing is the way to go, and I understand that many people want to just get on with the video recording process, minus the technical details. Whilst this is understandable, I really feel that having a basic understanding can make a massive improvement to your end results, and having a video of much greater quality. To put this another way, if your video is a typical video, where the zoom is all the way out, you will probably find that you have no problems.
What if, you wish to be a little creative, or you are zoomed in for a little more detail. In a case like this, an auto focus camera can drive you and your viewer nuts, as it may have two objects in view, and if one is nearer than the other, depending on its position in the frame, the auto focus may ‘fight’ to find the right point, as it constantly switches from object to object. This means that your shot will be going into and out of focus on a regular basis. In a case like this, there are several things you can do.
If you are determined to have full control, you can, typically through the camera menu system, switch auto focus mode off, and control the focus yourself. However, if you want to be somewhere in the middle, for want of a better term, consider the following points.
- Keep the subject near the centre of the frame, as this is where the focus circuitry will be concentrating on.
- Even though you may think it is cool, try to not zoom in and out during a shot. Rather use two cameras, and have one zoomed in, the other out, and then cut or switch between the two video cameras, or if you only have one camera, just skip the zooming in or out. I know it may seem cool, but in most cases, this does not work. To confirm this, look at a TV show to see for yourself.
- When in manual, you can use the depth of field principle, where you focus on one item, and the rest behind or in front, can be out of focus. This concentrates the viewer in the area you want. Remember this can only be done in manual mode.
To explain, the depth of field is the ratio of how much focus you have, for a lens range, given the light around you. The more light you have, the greater your depth of field.
Hence, if you want to leave the auto focus system on, try to keep the image zoomed out, or at least, focus on the action being in the centre of frame. This will reduce your auto focus issues substantially.
