M-16 Extended Bolt Releases
After 53 years of existence the AR-15 is still being improved. Although superb, the AR’s ergonomics can still be improved. One aspect of the AR-15s operation that can be improved is the operation of the bolt release catch. The bolt release catch is vital to both mag changes and stoppage clearance. Both magazine changes and stoppage clearance can be greatly speeded up by allowing the bolt release catch to be operated with the trigger finger of the right hand. This is achieved by supplementing or replacing the existing bolt release with an additional unit. These units put a ‘paddle’ through the top of the trigger enclosure for easy operation from the right hand side.
The Magpul BAD Lever attaches to the existing bolt release catch via a Torx screw. This unit is arguably the best looking on the market and really blends in with the AR’s aesthetics. This is a drop-in replacement unit and no permanent modifications to the weapon are required. To blend in with the rifle, the unit is machined from 6061 T-6 aluminum and Type III hard anodized in a matte black finish.
The Phase 5 Tactical Extended Bolt Release is less visually pleasing than the Magpul, but is made of steel and clamped to the existing bolt release with three crosshead machine screws. The Phase 5 was the first one on the market and looks less refined than the Magpul, but not to rest on their laurels, Phase 5 went on to produce a refined unit that overcomes the screw attachment objection often levelled at the Magpul BAD Lever.
The Phase 5 tactical EBRv2 is a very robust, but light weight cast steel lever that replaces the rifle’s existing bolt release. Lacking a clamping plate, the EBRv2 is much less discriminating in the receivers it will fit. 5.56mm AR-15 and, .308 LR-308 versions are available. The EBRv2 will not work its way off your rifle at a critical moment.
