How to remove the Decals – it depends on the type of decal!
The popularity of decals has been increasing over the years due to there use as an advertising and information tool. So what are the terms used to describe decals and the different types.
- Temporary decals / labels / stickers:
These are mainly used for identifying the contents or type of product. Examples include labelling of fruit or pricing an item. The adhesive does not affect the surface of the product and is not harmful to humans. These decals are usually stuck temporarily on to the products, and can be removed easily.
- Semi permanent decals / labels / stickers:
These are the latest form of decals that can be stick onto a wall or car, then removed at a later date without much effort. They have been developed due the difficulty of removing traditional style decals. They are popular in the event management and the advertising industry. An example is Foto stickers which are 1/5 inch thick vinyl and is durable plus versatile. This type of decal can also be reused many times.
- Permanent decals:
Permanent decals can be applied to any smooth and clean surface and last for years. They can be custom made to most colours and shapes. They are mainly used for advertising (e.g. side of cars or trucks) and also for sign posting (e.g. stop signs). They are generally hard to remove and require heat gun or rubber pad (Wonder Wheel) to remove them
- Very Tough to remove (reflective decals):
Reflective decals (e.g. the ones of the side of Police cars or sign posts, that reflect in the dark when light is shined on them) are very hard to remove. The reason being, the decal is much thicker than normal so more adhesive is applied and it’s harder to heat the vinyl (if using a heat gun) to remove the decal. For this type of decal a rubber pad is the best tool
