Rotator Cuff Repair Surgery At The Everett Clinic
Rotator cuff tendon tears are a common cause of shoulder pain and affect millions of people each year. Most people associate tendon tears with sports injuries or injuries in young people, but the majority of rotator cuff tendon tears occur gradually with age, as people perform the same overhead tasks again and again. In fact, some studies have shown that 30% of people over the age of 70 years have a rotator cuff tendon tear.

Interview with Dr. Michael J. Codsi, The Everett Clinic.
INTERVIEWER: Tell me a little about rotator cuff tears.
DR. CODSI: The rotator cuff is made up of four tendons that go around your shoulder, and they help you rotate your shoulder, which is why it’s called the rotator cuff.
One of those rotator cuff tendons, which is on the top of your shoulder, is very often worn out with age or use, or through an injury. The good news is, though, once these are torn we can repair these through the arthroscope.
Most patients have pain in the front of their shoulder when they have a rotator cuff tear. Surprisingly it often bothers them even when they sleep at night. When it gets that bad, and things like physical therapy do not help, then surgery is an option to fix that tendon.
Most patients do very well with this repair; unfortunately, though, it does take awhile to go through the rehabilitation process. That is probably the biggest difficulty of going through that type of surgery. I think that the more the patients know about that rehabilitation process, the easier it is to get through. I really consider that my biggest job. Half my job is doing the surgery, repairing the tendon, but the other half of my job is to get patients through therapy, and to encourage them to keep going through therapy, and to not give up when patients want to within a few months of their surgery. Once it heals, at the end of their rehab, they are much, much better, and they’re very happy with their pain relief, and they usually feel it’s very worthwhile.
