Tips to Signal for Rescue

If you do much hiking in the wilderness, the chance of needing to be rescued at some point is high.Don’t leave home without knowing these wilderness survival tips.

Mirrors produced for the purpose of signaling are often resistant to breakage, small, lightweight and produced with an eyelet hole for attaching it by a strap to the neck or waist. These mirrors also feature a targeting site in the middle. This hole is used by looking through it to direct the light towards specific locations along the ground or in the sky. When looking through the viewing hole, the user can determine the point of impact of the reflected beam and adjust it to catch the attention of emergency personnel.

Emergency mirrors are not required to use this method. A rear view mirror off of a vehicle, a magnetic compass mirror, a shiny CD, a mirror from a purse, aluminum foil, metal cans, or any other polished metal will do.

Stick aiming and the hand technique are two methods that will allow you to aim reflected sunlight.

The hand technique requires that you extend your hand with two fingers raised in a “V” formation. Position this “V” so that the object you wish to flash (an airplane for example) can be sighted between the two fingers. Tilt the mirror slightly to move the reflected light beam across your hand towards the center of the “V.” This will allow your light beam to come in contact with your target.

The stick method uses a twig or limb that is equal to the height of your chest or head. Position yourself in order that the top of your stick and the mirror are lined up with your target that you wish to signal. Adjust your mirror in order that your reflected beam touches the top of your stick.

Using your signal mirror, cast reflected light over the horizon regularly. You may not be able to see rescuers, but they might see you. Also, when you have signaled your object, do not keep going. The flash of the signaling mirror is so brilliant as to prove blinding.

The time to rehearse aiming the mirror is prior to your need of this skill.

There are a variety of symbols that signal a need for help. These can be placed on horizontal or vertical surfaces to be seen at a distance by rescuers. The shape of a triangle is a signal with three sides. Three is a universal signal for help. Write H-E-L-P in large, block letters. The letter “V” signals that immediate relief is needed. The letters “SOS” are a call for rescue. A large “X” signifies a need for emergency medical aid.

You can stamp these symbols out or use tree limbs, rocks, vegetation or brush to make the signal more visible. If you are in a flat or sandy area, you may be able to scratch the symbol into the dirt. The corners of a triangle can be made more visible by setting fires or flares at each angled point.

An automobile should be made easier to spot by air search teams by clearing away brush, use fabric as a flag, or anything else you have on hand. Use fuel and oil to start signal fires and feed them with material from the car that creates smoke. Place as many symbols as possible around your location to make your position most visible.

Once help has been spotted, wave. Be sure to wave with two hands and arms. Use the universal signal for distress which is extending and waving both arms while crossing your hands over your head. A one-armed wave signals that all is well. It is best NOT to get these confused.

If you feel that the chance for a quick rescue is great and it takes little energy for you to signal, then signaling for rescue should be high on the list of priorities of someone who needs rescuing.
