Independence Monument, Phnom Penh – A testament to the spirit of Independence
Built in the year 1958, the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh is one of the most significant structures in the city. Reaching 20 metres, the monument was constructed solely out of red stone. Founded under the monarchy of King Nordom, who was King Sihanouk’s father, the monument plays a vital role in national celebrations. As a centre of attraction during the Independence Day celebrations, the monument is usually lit up with a ceremonial flame. Lining the stairways are floral tributes and wreathes for the war heroes.
