Black Widow

New Huntsman Spider

Have you ever watched a spider spinning a web? It is one of the most fascinating sights you can see – it can be a wonder, a marvel of nature. My wife had never truly though about it until 1 morning when we woke, I was staring out of the window and she asked what I was staring at – I pointed in the tiny spider painstakingly producing a lovely silk pattern across the corner of our window frame. She laughed at me – I had been watching the creature for around 45 minutes, totally in awe and focussed on th beauty that was unfolding just before me.

The Volkswagen Polo is one of the elder statesmen of the Supermini market; remaining stoic in its refusal to disappear from forecourts across the land. Right after over 30 years on our roads, the Polo is still observed on each high street the length and breadth of the country. It’s available in hatchback, coupé and estate variants so every person is catered for. However, as Bob Dylan as soon as perceptively announced, the occasions they’re a’ changing.

New drivers will opt for the lower end models, whilst the more adventurous will jump straight towards the Golf. It would seem to the untrained eye that Volkswagen are putting the squeeze on their personal product. Are VW struggling to uncover a suitable niche for the Polo?

Let’s take a look in the competition. That goes without mentioning the Fiats, the Toyotas along with the Hondas, all of that are turning heads and gaining notoriety within the Supermini circles.

In a purely aesthetic sense, the Polo does not disappoint. The evolved looks cannot hide the treasured Volkswagen lineage, the curvy physique updated to keep up using the Joneses whilst remaining distinctly ‘VW’. In relative terms the Polo is akin to an aging aunty having a keen desire to look 17 again; perhaps a nip here and tuck there and she’ll almost be there… nearly. But would you prefer to be observed with her? Well, as a matter of fact, yes you would…if she was a Polo…which she’s not…but you realize what I mean…sort of. The favourite chunky, boxy body has been smoothed out for contemporary taste, but is nonetheless unmistakably the ‘Volkswagen Look’.

I really like spiders, my wife by no means will! A great deal of individuals in no way will, but once you could appreciate their place in nature, then I think it is possible to grow to like them. You will locate them anywhere and everywhere, they come in all sorts of colours and shapes and sizes, all are poisonous – some just impacts their prey, some are poisonous to humans (deadly even). Some species of spiders grow as significant as a dinner plate – the Huntsman Spider in Australia is huge. When I lived in Melbourne, they had been everywhere….garages, toilet, garden…they usually are not poisonous, but their bite is often painful. Despite my appreciate of spiders, I still took a breath when I saw 1 move. I also saw a redback (related towards the black widow) as well as a white tail (which has a venom which can cause necrosis towards the bite area). The latter are hunters and usually do not spin a web, but seek their prey (which is other spiders) out. Following that I maintained a respectful distance!!!

There are a lot of items that make spiders attractive – the way they move: they essentially fill their legs with blood which straightens them out, the front legs reaching forwards and pulling as they empty and the back legs straightening out and pushing. Amazing. Some of the larger tarantula type spiders come in wonderful colour variations – cobalt blue, red knee (gorgeous orange hairs), pink toes (they do have pink hairs around their feet). I saw a tiny lime green spider in our garden the other day, certainly stunning.

Performance-wise the Polo is in no way going to reinvent the wheel, but no present or prospective Polo owners would expect it to. The complete Volkswagen shtick is reliability, sturdiness along with a bit of oomph occasionally.

The tired old cliché of effective German engineering is going to be trotted out here, but there isn’t a single nuance of frivolity to be identified on the whole car; every little thing is functional, due to the fact if it wasn’t it wouldn’t be on the car. Apply this logic to German beers for those who will; by no means the tastiest of beverages and frequently far more pricey than the other beers, but you generally seem to obtain drunker quicker for those who opt for the Bavarian way. That, my friends, is efficiency.
