Gun Holsters 101: Discovering the Types and Categories of Gun Holsters
Did you know that if you are trying to buy a holster and you scan the market today, you will end up with virtually hundreds if not thousands of gun holsters available for your use? And because of those numerous options, the search can be quite confusing. So to help you out, here are some information that can make the selection process somehow easier.
Holsters are typically grouped into two categories: based on their use and how they are worn. Let us spend a few minutes to discuss these categories further.
Categories of Gun Holsters Based on Use
Holsters of this category can be subdivided into 4 groups namely:
1. Duty holsters – these are commonly worn by law enforcers and security personnel. They are called as such because they are made to complete one’s uniform. These holsters enable the firearms to be worn openly, making them easy to retrieve or put into place when necessary.
2. Tactical or Military holsters – these are holsters used by military men in the field. Unlike other holsters which are traditionally made of leather, tactical holsters are commonly made of nylon or plastic and they usually bear a camouflage design to match the wearer’s uniform.
3. Concealment holsters – as implied, these holsters are worn to keep compact guns hidden from sight. They are commonly made of light materials that enable the wearer to bear the firearms easily and comfortably. Common concealment holsters are often worn under the coat, underpants, legs or ankles. If you want to get a better idea, these are holsters worn by secret agents as you would commonly see in films and televisions.
4. Sporting holsters – these are holsters carried by competitors in shooting events. They are conveniently worn at thigh level, making the gun easy to retrieve during fast draw competitions or hunting.
Under this category, you would find western gun holsters worn by cowboys in the Wild West. But do not be fooled because western gun holsters are not used by cowboys alone. They are also collected by gun enthusiasts because of their interesting designs and the materials used in them.
Categories of Gun Holsters Based on the Method of Wearing
There are a lot of groupings, under this category. Here are common examples that you would usually encounter.
1. Outside the waistband – method of wearing used for duty and tactical holsters. These are called as such because these holsters are worn slightly behind the hipbone.
2. Inside the waistband – are holsters commonly clipped to a belt.
3. Belly band holsters – unlike inside the waistband (IWB) holsters they are commonly built in with a belt. These holsters are made to be worn under untucked shirts.
4. Pocket holsters – perfect for keeping and holding mouse guns in the pocket and out of sight.
5. Thigh holsters – holsters fastened to the leg just about the level where the handgun can easily reach it.
6. Ankle holsters – made for people who want to carry small secondary handguns in concealment.
7. Chest holsters – these are usually vests with pockets that are custom made for carrying guns. They conveniently keep the gun close to the body enabling the wearer to draw even when they are in a sitting position.
Those are the types of holsters you should know about. You can use the information you knew to help you select a gun holster for your own pistol.
