Buying a Surplus Military Rifle Will Save You Money
The word “Ammunition” comes from a French word, “la munition” which related to any war-related ordnance. Today, it’s commonly referred to simply as “ammo”. Historically, that meant projectiles, such as cartridges, shot and bullets, as well astheir primers and fuses, that were fired from canons and guns or otherwise propelled. Today, the term encompasses a broader collection of weapons including nuclear, biological, chemical, or explosive material, such as rockets or grenades.
Did you know that people from different walks in life are interested in ammunition – from hog hunters to full-time forensics, ballistics, mettalurgy and chemistry experts and those in manufacturing disciplines. Obviously, there’s the current and former law enforcement and military people. On the more passive side are historians (particularly of the Civil War) and hobbyists interested in the evolution of ammunition, and the amazing variety of imaginative designs that have been tried.
Some people who are interested in weaponry are collectors rather than active hunters or shooters and building a collection of militaria and weaponry is their hobby. Since the end of the Second World War the United States has imported and sold a great many surplus military rifles. A few models are still being imported as various militaries around the world, particularly in the smaller nations, clean out their reserve stocks of obsolete rifles.
Hunters favor a range of rifles with the New England Firearms Handi-Rifle being one of the most popular (though it can be hard to source due to that popularity). Buying a new rifle can be cost quite a bit and it’s always worth checking if there are used firearms for sale either online of in your local gun stores.
Traditionally, when you wanted to buy ammunition, you’d visit your local gun store. Of course, these days you have the option of getting ammo for sale online. But knowing what you need is important. There’s more to buying ammo online other than looking for the cheapest prices. Other factors should be taken into account so you’re certain you’ll get exactly what you require – what you intend to hunt will determine the type of ammo you need.
You also need to consider how much ammunition you require. Locate a source, such as military surplus ammunition, where you can easily get replacement stocks of the same ammunition so you don’t end up switching ammunition and having to take a trip to the target range to sight in the new ammunition. It takes time to zero in a rifle and ammo isn’t that cheap, even if you’re buying surplus ammo. So save yourself some time and money.
Military surplus ammunition is, in fact, the ammo that the various armed forces (Marine Corps, Army and Navy) have surplus to requirements. In times past, it also included ammo that soldiers returned home with when they were discharged, and then later sold. Now, such things are more rigorously controlled and weapons and ammunition must be handed back before a soldier leaves military life. Military surplus ammunition is one of the most popular types of ammunition simply because the savings in cost are usually pretty substantial when compared to the prices offered by outdoor and hunting speciality stores and other more generic big stores.
Surplus ammunition isn’t just limited to the US forces, however – it can also come from outside the U.S. An example of that is the cardridge first used in the SKS carbine by the Soviet Union in the Word War II – the 7.62x39mm rifle cartridge.
Do a bit of research online when looking at ammo prices and availablility and keep in mind that the least expensive solution isn’t always the best. Doing the research will save you money and time in the long run.
